“I was biking home at 5pm and it was already very dark so I felt unsafe,” remarked a high schooler. The risk of accidents may also be higher if it gets dark early, especially if everyone is trying to get home from work or school.

The opposing side wants to stay in the earlier Standard Time year round. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine supports this stance, claiming that daylight saving time disturbs the body’s natural circadian rhythm. “The one-hour time shift during daylight saving time results in less exposure to light in the morning and greater exposure to evening light relative to typical sleep and work schedules. As a result, we tend to go to bed and fall asleep later, resulting in chronic sleep loss,” quotes the AASM article.

Many don’t have a problem with the system, but the timing. “I don’t care when it gets dark, I just don’t like when it changes,” explained a high school junior, “Just pick one, either works.” Due to contention in legislature, the bi-yearly system stays next year.

Daylight Savings for Next Year

(W) DEBORAH CHEN · (E) RYAN LEI

Every year on the second Sunday of March, millions of people across the world lose an hour of their sleep, or rather, they set their clocks one hour forward. Similarly, on the first Sunday of November, clocks are turned back an hour to “normal”. This global phenomenon is known as “Daylight Saving Time”.

Once a way to conserve war resources, it is now a bi-yearly event that occurs in March. There has been widespread discontent with the system, including calls to make DST permanent.

One side of the argument supports that daylight savings should be made permanent. The early sunset that occurs during non-daylight saving times is an issue for people such as those who must travel in the afternoons.

MAPPA Studios Strike

In the last few months, folks worldwide have been celebrating the drop of the hotly anticipated Jujutsu Kaisen Season—an anime that's been gaining major traction lately. While fans are riding high on the thrill of seeing their favorite manga panels brought to life, there's a hefty toll being paid over at the animation studio. The release of the new JJK (Jujutsu Kaisen) season has brought forth a couple of issues and raised some eyebrows.

Mappa studios already had a bunch of projects in the pipeline. Their stuff is top-notch, which means each project demands a ton of time and effort. The crew's been pushed to the brink, dealing with a not-so-great work environment for less-than-stellar pay. JJK has seen its fair share of corner-cutting because the deadlines were way too tight.

An interview spilled the beans on how awesome one of the fight scenes in JJK was, but it turns out it was only about 50% of what they initially planned to whip up. Workers even talked about the possibility of going on strike, but that dream got crushed because there's just too much demand for their skills.

The problem's still lingering, and we're all crossing our fingers for better working conditions for these incredible artists. They deserve a setup that lets them keep churning out fantastic work without feeling like they're at their wit's end. Let's hope for smoother seas ahead in the animation world, ensuring we get more of the awesome content we love.

Due to the increased inquiry of the intimate interaction between man and melody, a team of researchers, led by Wolfgang Tschacher, from the University Hospital of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, in Bern, Switzerland, conducted a study to investigate the intense kinship produced by music. As the 132 participants at a concert were monitored and analyzed, the successful experiment extracted the conclusion of not only an individual and music being brought in integration, but fused man and man as well. The participants vitals such as heart rate, blood pressure, and other involuntary factors part of the the autonomic nervous systems, had synchronized

It is once again proven that music is a convener of unifying the audience in a beautiful avenue.

The shrines also offer "Omamori" (お守り), which are unique charms with mystical properties believed to safeguard against specific things. These special talismans serve as tangible reminders of hope, protection, and the shared desire for a positive journey ahead.

The act of purchasing Omamori is a symbolic gesture, adding depth to the spiritual connection that permeates the Japanese New Year celebration.

On the culinary side of things, certain foods take center stage, each laden with symbolic meaning. Kelp, a staple in New Year dishes, symbolizes happiness, while kazunoko, a type of egg roe, embodies fertility and the promise of new beginnings. The meticulous incorporation of these ingredients into celebratory meals demonstrates the profound connection between Japanese cultural beliefs and their culinary traditions.

Beyond the material aspects, the essence of New Year's in Japan revolves around a collective celebration of good fortune. The Japanese people, known for their profound respect for tradition, seize the opportunity during this festive season to strengthen family bonds and express enduring love. It's a time-honored occasion where the warmth of familial ties intertwines with the anticipation of a promising future.

For those fortunate enough to find themselves in Japan during the New Year, try visiting a shrine as it not only unveils the rich cultural tapestry of Japan but also allows one to appreciate the depth of meaning behind each ritual and tradition. The meaning of New Year's to Japanese people focuses a lot on the spirit of unity, hope, and the collective embrace of what lies ahead.

This holiday season, shoppers need to be cautious when it comes to buying gift cards. With leaving clueless shoppers empty pockets and robbing their sense of holiday cheer, gift-card scammers have made their way into your Christmas presents. Investigators in Pinole, California, have alerted the public to a slick gift card fraud that has already cost victims hundreds and thousands of dollars. Police have revealed how their scam works, The visible code on the barcode that is scanned during the transaction on the outside of the envelope is different from the one that is used to actually spend the money. However, the clever criminals have managed to extract the spending portion by cutting it out and leaving the rest on the shelf as is. When the buyers go to purchase the gift card they discover that it is worthless. "Somebody was taking all these cards from the store without paying for them and without loading them up, taking them home. And what they do, is they heat up these envelopes to where they can open them as carefully as they can, remove the card, and actually cut the top of the card off," Officer Duggan said. A recent incident occurred recently at Sacramento, California where a man was found with a staggering 5,000 Target and Apple gift cards in his possession. Keeping this in mind, the department has advised customers to be aware of this situation so it would prevent it from happening to others.

As all of us approached Black Friday with certain gifts in mind and prepared, retailers also came into Black Friday with certain things prepared. As these thousands of dollar items go on sale for over 60% off, retailers are bound to lose their profits and money. So, retailers such as Walmart, Target, and even Best Buy come into Black Friday by using different items than what is stated and many other different scams. These retailers try to hide their scams but are inevitably caught by their customers who are engulfed in that shopping madness.

Scams in different retail stores are much more prominent around this time because of how much they can make by fooling shoppers. For example, different retailers can jack up the price of certain items, and once Black Friday hits, they show the 50% sign which brings it back to the original price it was before the Black Friday season. One retail store caught by this was the infamous Target. Target is notorious for their big sales on technology during Black Friday, and they have taken advantage of their “name” as a retail store. One incident was when a woman went to shop for Black Friday at Target where she was met with a television that was on sale for eighty dollars off. This was shown on the paper that was inserted into one of the metal signs. When she reached to take out the paper, another piece of paper behind the Black Friday one showed that it was the same price as before Black Friday. This is a common scam that retailers do to incline their customers to purchase the item since it is on a “sale”.

No matter where we are on the map, there's one festive occasion that unites us all each year—New Year's! Every nation has its own way of welcoming the upcoming year, and one of the lesser-known traditions is from Japan. Within some of these traditions, the most popular is known as "Hatsumode" (初詣), a remarkable practice involving visits to sacred shrines.

In the heart of this tradition lies the family members collectively visiting a shrine to express their hopes for a prosperous new year. The shrines create an atmosphere of spirituality and reflection as people partake in the age-old custom of offering prayers for good fortune. It's not just a visit; it's more of a pilgrimage towards a promising future.

Furthermore, California's diverse population presents unique challenges in meeting the needs of English language learners. With 19% percent of California’s students coming from non-English-speaking backgrounds, the state's schools must invest in comprehensive language programs and support services to ensure that these students have the resources they need to succeed academically. (Source A) Despite these challenges, California has also implemented positive reforms to enhance its education system. The adoption of the Common Core State Standards, designed to provide a consistent and rigorous academic framework, aims to improve student readiness for college and career. Additionally, the state has invested in initiatives to expand early education programs, recognizing the importance of a strong foundation for future academic success. Efforts to improve teacher training and professional development have also been emphasized. By investing in the professional growth of educators, California aims to enhance the overall quality of instruction, ultimately benefiting students and promoting a culture of lifelong learning.

While California's education system faces challenges such as funding disparities, socio-economic diversity, and language barriers, the state has taken steps to address these issues and improve its education rating. By continuing to invest in resources, technology, and teacher training, California can strive toward an equitable and high-quality education system, ensuring

that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential in the diverse and dynamic landscape of the Golden State.

and just daily needs in general. With a 5.4% increase in June over the previous year, food costs, and a substantial portion of Bay Area expenses continue to rise. Food spent at home went up in price by 4.7%, but dining out showed an increase in price of 6.6%, beyond the region's typical rate of inflation. gas prices in the Bay Area continued to skyrocket, with some regions seeing averages above $6 per gallon. Experts say the price increase to oil refinery delays in California as well as a decrease in oil output from Saudi Arabia and Russia.

The rising expense of living in California, more specifically the Bay Area, is becoming increasingly apparent as residents deal with day-to-day struggles. Recent research from the United Way Bay Area highlights the financial challenges that half of working families experience on a daily basis, stating that a family of four needs an average annual salary of $120,000 to survive. Alongside cities like New York, Singapore, Tel Aviv, Hong Kong, and Paris, the Bay Area ranks eighth globally on a list of metro areas with the highest cost of living, showing a worldwide trend of rising prices. According to The Economist's data, big cities have seen an incredible 8% increase in prices over the past year, which has been the highest anyone has seen in over two decades. The monthly homeownership costs are more than twice as high as monthly rental costs—a difference that cannot be found anywhere else in the country. This is supported by a Redfin analysis, which shows that the average home in San Jose is 165% more expensive to buy than to rent each month, with San Francisco and Oakland coming in second and third,, at 139% and 99%. The Bay Area faces a concerning number of households that need help to meet their basic needs, despite having a significant number of wealthy people, which drives up costs.

While the Bay Area’s housing market is high, that is not just it. Bay Area residents have faced an incredible amount of prices going up for groceries

Education In California

California, often celebrated for its diverse culture, technological innovation, and breathtaking landscapes, also grapples with challenges in its education system. While the state has made strides in various areas, its education rating has faced scrutiny, raising questions about the overall quality of education.

One of the key factors influencing California's education rating is the issue of funding. The state consistently ranks below the national average in per-pupil spending, leading to challenges in providing adequate resources for schools. This financial disparity is extremely apparent at Kennedy High School as Kennedy continues to have large class sizes, limited access to updated educational materials, and insufficient support for teachers. These obstacles, that students not only at Kennedy but across California face, are preventing students from receiving a well-rounded education, therefore hindering their academic growth.

Another aspect affecting California's education quality is the socio-economic diversity across the state. 61.5% of California’s K-12 students are

socioeconomically disadvantaged. (Source A)

Disparities in income levels contribute to a divide, where students from lower-income families may lack access to essential technology and internet connectivity.

Starting January 1st, a new law involving a speed camera pilot program has been approved by the government, allowing cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose to install up to 33 cameras in school zones and high-accident areas. Driven by the tragedies of many pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers in the past year, this new way of security aims to curb speeding and improve road safety. Fines ranging from $50 to $500 could be issued in the mail without the need for a traffic stop. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan believes the installation of these cameras will take place in the summer. This stresses their proven track record in reducing accidents by over 50% in various cities worldwide.

By: Katelynn Phan

As many students have been made aware that our school was gifted with a new principal, after Mr. Velez left with the senior class of 2023. Dr. Fisher is in his first 5 months of being principal after working at our establishment since 2006, 10 years of that being one of our wonderful assistant principals. With a wealth of experience in education, Dr. Fisher is poised to lead John F. Kennedy High School into a new era of academic excellence and community engagement.

Dr. Fisher enters principal with an impressive background in education. His journey in the field began as a dedicated classroom teacher, where he taught in the science department for 6 years where he demonstrated a passion for student success and a commitment to fostering a positive learning environment. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, taking on the leadership role as assistant principal which allowed him to influence educational policies at a higher level. In an exclusive interview, I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Fisher to learn more about his vision, goals, and the exciting journey that lies ahead for students and staff here.

AVID is a program that helps students be prepared for college. But without the great staff and teachers, AVID wouldn’t really be as helpful, right? One of the amazing staff that AVID has is Ms. Margi Thomas! In an interview, Ms. Thomas tells us a lot more about AVID and why AVID is a helpful program for those who are trying to go to college.

The first question I asked was “How does AVID help students with college-readiness?”. Ms. Thomas responded “AVID helps students with college-readiness in many ways. In 9th and 10th grade students are learning all about time management, study skills, note taking, etc. These soft skills help students become prepared for more rigorous coursework. In their junior and senior year AVID students are learning about Financial Aid, doing best college fit research, and scholarship searches. The curriculum in 11th & 12th grade also focuses on 4 Essential Skills for College Readiness- those skills are: Analyzing a Prompt or Academic Task, Selective and Purpose-Driven Reading, Focused Note-Taking, and Integrating Sources into Texts”.

Another question is “Why should students join AVID next year?”, which she responded with “Besides having a leg up on the competition for college, the AVID class does a lot of fun activities like team building (we did a Gingerbread house competition in Dec.) we have a college panel every year where former AVID students come back and talk about their college experiences, we do college tour field trips, and fun Friday activities. We also host an annual College Signing Day where we celebrate where the seniors have committed to college for the fall and we have a senior banquet at the end of the year where seniors are presented with AVID sashes that they wear for graduation. The AVID class really becomes a family for the students, they are together for four years and all have a common goal and they really cheer each other on, it’s a positive and fun place to be.”

Does everyone have that one teacher that they could easily talk to? The teacher who you just feel comfortable asking for pieces of advice and just feeling safe with them. Well, I know one! One of the teachers who checks these boxes would be Ms. Thomas.

Ms. Thomas teaches AP Bio and regular Biology and she went to San Jose State University to get her degree. When given the opportunity to interview her, I asked “What is your favorite memory as a teacher?”, Ms. Thomas responded, “Probably being asked to Winter Ball by a student last year”. Ms. Thomas’ popularity skyrocketed after going viral on TikTok, with people commenting on how cool she is and how she is their favorite teacher.

When asked about his inspiration to become principal, Dr. Fisher spoke passionately about his former educator in highschool, that ultimately left a great impact on him still to this day. “It happened in 11th grade, Mr. Joneses’ physics class, he talked highly of impressing upon educating the next generation, and it resonated with me, that being said, when it came from moving from the classroom into education, it came out of the desire to help more people and students.”

When asked about Dr. Fisher’s goal that he wants to accomplish as principal with kennedy he stated., “I am trying to emphasize the importance for students to understand why high school is so important for them, in terms of transition into their personal life, into their future careers, into their hopes and dreams, and the promises of fulfilling their legacy for the next generation.”

We are unsure what lies in the future for JFK, but we do know that we have a remarkable individual stepping up to the plate and leading our school into greatness. The students, teachers, and parents of JFK are undoubtedly in for an exciting and evolutionary journey under his leadership.

Ms. Thomas’ favorite photo!

One last question I asked Ms. Thomas is about motherhood. When asked “What are the struggles or something you’re proud of as a new mother?”, she responded, “Working full time and having a kid is such a grind, but I’m proud that I’m making it work”.

Ms. Thomas also briefly talked about her favorite artist, Taylor Swift. When asked about her favorite Taylor Swift era, she answered with “Red” but also talked about how “Midnights” is one of her top eras too. Her love for Taylor Swift is evident as she usually plays Taylor Swift songs in class, which her students (including me) jam to every day. She also hosts RTIs called “Taylor Swift Study Hall” so that students can study while vibing to Taylor Swift with her and singing along as well.

What Is AVID and How Is It Beneficial?

AVID’s Current State and Future Plans

By: Marc Jay Julio

By: Janelle Sanders

With a goal to help students achieve their academic needs, The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at John F. Kennedy High school aims to encourage students to not only challenge themselves academically but to help students build relationships with others. With the first term of the 2023-24 school year coming to an end, the AVID program has come up with many tactics to help support each student’s needs physically, mentally, and academically. There have been numerous complaints from students in the AVID program this year. Several students felt like they were not getting the academic help that the program intended. Others felt like they did not have a sense of belonging in the program, which caused many students wanting to quit the program.

As the complaints started to spread among the whole school, the AVID program started to resolve their issues to the program to make it more welcoming to students. With the teachers having a passion for students to succeed academically, they found a way to engage their students in exciting activities so students could have a sense of relief along with their academic stress. A junior AVID student, Vian Einhaus has a sense of what AVID has to bring for the future. Here is what he had to say about AVID’s current state and future.

When asked what AVID has been doing in the past three weeks, Vian responded with, “AVID has been doing a lot more TRF’S (Tutor Request Form) so students can gain support from other students and teachers on their homework assignments. AVID has been opening more TRF sessions where students can get all the academic help they need

So far, AVID is trying to build a more supportive environment among students by changing the way we run things. Constant TRF sessions contribute a huge role in our support system.”

What event is AVID going to have in the month of December? “AVID is having a class-wide gingerbread house competition,” Vian says, “There would be one member from each class and they would be part of a team. This has always been an AVID tradition and it is a great way for students to build new friendships and have a sense of belonging. As for the junior class, we have a secret santa where we have random names and we give each other gifts.

What can we expect from AVID for the rest of the school year? Vian responds, stating, “The main thing that we have in the second semester are field trips to different college campuses. Besides that, we also learn the college application process so students can get the feel of what it is like to apply for college.”

What is AVID? AVID is one of the many unique classes John F. Kennedy has to offer. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. According to John F. Kennedy’s website, “AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.” Mia Viallobos, a Junior Titan in AVID states, “In AVID basically what we do is we learn about stuff for college and how to get ready and prepared for college and what we will need to do when college applications come up.” The concept of AVID is very appealing and sounds beneficial because many students struggle to cross that bridge between high school and college. Additionally, AVID compels their students to keep up with their school work. Mia Viallobos explains, “I think AVID helped me because when I realized I wanted to get serious about my academics I had a lot of people to support me and help me. And when winter time comes around you know people start to get seasonal depression and they help me stay on track and kind of work through that academically.” So, not only is AVID a class to help you when you are unmotivated, it is a support system when having mental health issues.

Moving on, one factor that tends to cause hesitancy to join AVID is the immense workload.

The John F. Kennedy website showcases there weekly schedule, “Mondays: AVID Curriculum (WICOR & ASFI), Set Weekly Goals, Tuesdays: Tutorials, Wednesdays: AVID Curriculum (WICOR & ASFI), Cornell Notes and Learning Log Check, Thursdays: Tutorials, Fridays: Motivational Activities and Binder Checks” (WICOR: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading). Furthermore Mia Viallobos states, “So in Avid we have binder checks every two weeks and we're required to have at least 40 pages of notes in the binder checks. Also every week we have TRS which is kind of like tutoring sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week.” This amount of school work can be tedious and can deter people from joining AVID. Mia V. combats this by explaining how most of these assumptions are false. “I think AVID is not as strenuous as people describe it to be. I think it might seem like a lot of work to somebody who is not super focused on academics to push themselves to put in their best work in school but I feel like everybody who is has an advantage. So being in AVID knowing you want to go to college and knowing you want to get good grades it's really not that hard like it's not as much work as people think it is.” Overall, despite discouraging rumors, AVID is a support system that guides students towards college.

Kennedy’s Engineering

Class

By: Keisha Sangil

Not only does Kennedy have an engineering club, but they also have an Engineering class that people can take. If you want to do and learn engineering on a deeper level, then this class is for you. This year’s engineering class has a new teacher; Mr. Bega! I interviewed Alicia Wong again not for her club, but this time as a student in the engineering department.

When asked “What made you want to take the engineering class?”, Alicia responded, “I originally took the engineering class in my freshman year and wanted to finish the series. I always liked robotics from middle school so I wanted to explore it further in high school”.

Another question I asked her is “What do you usually do in class?”. Alicia stated “Usually we’re given a problem and then we have to solve it in some way or another so the class really tests our problem solving skills. Each project/problem usually explores a different field of engineering so it exposes us to different career choices. Like once in the class I took back in freshman year, we explored the history of a catapult and even made one. This year, the principles of engineering class, we made a waterwheel”.

Based on Alicia’s experience with the engineering class, it is evident that it is a class that can test your skills, thinking, and more. If you want to explore engineering and find out if it’s something you’d want to do in the future, definitely sign up for Kennedy’s engineering class!

Kennedy offers a bunch of clubs for students to join. These clubs help students increase their circle of friends, skills, and more. One of the great clubs Kennedy has is JFK Tech. JFK Tech allows students to grow and develop their skills when it comes to engineering, especially if they plan to take that route in the future. I had the opportunity to interview Alicia Wong, JFK Tech’s Vice President, to tell us more about Kennedy’s Engineering Club.

When asked, “How does Tech Club help students explore engineering?”, Alicia stated “JFK Tech allows students who have no experience in anything tech-related to have a chance to make and do something fun. We also help students find internship opportunities that best suit them! We try our very best to make tech cool and fun and also help students explore what part of tech they like and don’t like”.

I also asked, “What upcoming projects do you plan to do in the future?” and she responded “We just launched our second ever hackathon called Innohacks! We’re going to host another hackathon in the spring so please look forward to it! In JFK Tech we plan to do more activities and projects relating to rockets, RC planes, and many other fun projects throughout the year”.

If you have an interest in technology or engineering, JFK Tech Club is one of the clubs you should join! Like Alicia stated, it will help you develop skills and gain experience. If you are interested in the club and have questions, follow @jfk.tech on Instagram and join their Remind @jfktech2!

Changes In the John F. Kennedy High School Campus

By: Jude Pinzon

Throughout the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school year, there have been major changes made throughout the campus of John F. Kennedy High School. Although these changes being made has to do with the appearance, but also the functionality of bathrooms and classrooms. With the use of hard construction work, it seems the project being made on campus is nearing the final product, which is a lot more than just changes in the school’s appearance.

Construction on the JFK campus

Taken By: Jude Pinzon

A significant change made during this time of construction is the difference in the bathrooms. The bathrooms have completely changed the appearance from being gloomy with yellowish colored walls to a nice blue tone roaming throughout the walls. The floors have turned into tiles, which have a similar color to the walls but more vibrant. On top of the walls and floors, the sinks now have auto-detectable sensors for water which helps with keeping the hands of the bathroom users cleaner, and new locks were installed onto the bathroom stall doors. These new additions to the bathrooms makes the appearance more appealing, but also makes this private place more of a sanitary use.

Bathrooms have made significant improvements, the classrooms however have made just as many improvements as the bathrooms. These improvements include both the appearance, but also the functionality of the AC and heater. The walls, tiles, and roof have been painted vibrant colors such as purple and white, which makes the classrooms feel more full of life. In addition, the AC and heaters have improved greatly, which gives the teachers and students a more comfortable space to work based on how the weather is that day. These new improvements being made on each classroom on campus can positively affect students and teachers' work environment, as they will no longer be working in a much gloomier environment than how it is now.

Although these changes are still ongoing, it seems to have already had a great impact on the school’s environment both in a private setting and public setting. With the continuation of the construction worker’s hard work, John F. Kennedy High School will be able to have a better work space for all the students, teachers, and staff within the school.

Where Is Our Money Going?

By: Tiajeanae Armstrong

It is very transparent that our school is undergoing a process of construction throughout all of the classrooms. It makes you wonder where we are able to get this money to do this, and if we are not being given enough financial support as the smallest school in the district. The allocation of funds in school districts is a matter of great concern for parents, educators, and the community at large. In the case of the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD), residents often wonder where their tax dollars are being directed and how the financial resources are distributed among the myriad needs of the district. A significant portion of the FUSD budget is dedicated to teacher salaries and benefits. Attracting and retaining qualified educators is crucial for maintaining a high standard of education, and competitive compensation packages play a pivotal role in achieving this goal. The advancement of technology in education is evident in FUSD's budget, which allocates funds for instructional materials and technological resources. This includes textbooks, online learning platforms, and devices that enhance the learning experience for students. School infrastructure requires ongoing maintenance and occasional upgrades to provide a safe and conducive learning environment. Funds are directed towards repairing buildings, upgrading facilities, and ensuring the overall well-being of the physical spaces where education takes place. A portion of the budget is dedicated to supporting special education programs within FUSD. These programs are designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, providing them with tailored resources and support services. Administrative costs encompass the salaries of district-level administrators, office staff, and other personnel who contribute to the smooth operation of the school district.

This includes budget management, policy development, and other administrative functions. FUSD recognizes the importance of continuous professional development for educators. Funds are allocated to training programs, workshops, and seminars that help teachers stay current with best practices in education. Beyond the classroom, FUSD prioritizes student support services, including counseling, mental health resources, and programs that foster a positive and inclusive school culture. This reflects a commitment to addressing the holistic needs of students. The district recognizes the value of extracurricular activities in students' overall development. Funds are allocated to support a variety of clubs, sports, and cultural programs that contribute to a well-rounded educational experience. The Spirit of Giving

Holiday Family Traditions

By: Grecia Supo Canales

By: Aditi Thirumannamalai

In a world that lives in hustle and bustle, the spirit of giving stands as a beacon of light, reminding us of the wonderful impact that generosity can have on individuals and communities alike. Beyond the material exchange, the act of giving embodies compassion, empathy, and a shared sense of humanity.

At its core, the spirit of giving creates emotional value. It encompasses the offering of time, kindness, and support to those in need. Whether it's volunteering at a local shelter, lending a listening ear or contributing skills to a community project, the act of giving creates a sense of genuinity and selflessness that seems to fail to prosper in this day in time.

The holiday season often amplifies the spirit of giving, as individuals and organizations come together to spread joy and alleviate the burdens faced by others. However, the true essence of giving extends throughout the year, becoming a way of life rather than a seasonal gesture. Acts of kindness, no matter how small, carry the potential to brighten someone's day, lift their spirits, and create a sense of connection that transcends societal boundaries.

The holiday season is the perfect time to embrace family traditions and even create new ones for the New Year! Anton Lloyd Gapasin, Ismael Rasul, and Hasini Madiraja, three high school juniors, share their favorite family customs that make their holidays extra special.

First off, Anton’s holiday season is all about the warmth of daily family gatherings. He vividly describes how nice it is to see his family and relatives chilling in the warmth of their home. “It’s not really about the presents,” Anton explains. “It’s more about…just hanging out and enjoying the holidays.” And when it comes to the massive spread of delicious food, he quickly adds, “We also eat lots of food! The spread is amazing and it’s a miracle that we all finish it.”

Similarly, Ismael’s family has a super cool food tradition that’s as mouth watering as it is heartwarming. His mother prepares a large cut of beef shoulder, placing it in the oven overnight to create an incredible masterpiece enjoyed the next day. Inviting cousins over to enjoy the delicious meal adds an extra layer of joy to his family’s Christmas celebrations. Ismael explains with lots of joy, “Because of being left overnight, the beef basically melts in your mouth and bursts with flavor! It’s the best way to celebrate in my opinion.”

However, for Hasini, the holiday season means heading off to Hawaii for a more tropical twist on her holiday plans. This includes the most adventurous activities such as celebrating New Year’s on different islands, cruising in the middle of the ocean with family friends, and feasting at various types of Italian restaurants. “It’s a break from the usual winter chill,” Hasini recalls happily. She claims that her most favorite part of the celebration is getting to go scuba-diving on Christmas day. “At first, I was really scared of the fish,” she admits. “But once I dove in, I just forgot about my fear. It felt natural.”

Just like these traditions, holiday traditions all over the world show just how celebrated Christmas is! It can remind us that the holidays are not just about presents, but it's about family, friends, pets, and most importantly, having all the fun in the world! The true meaning of Christmas lies in the connections we share. It is the best time to create memories, share our gratitude, and relax with the people we love. Whether you're taking part in a centuries-old cultural tradition or creating new ones! So, as we swap gifts, let's also celebrate our diverse holiday traditions alongside everyone else around the world!

Green Ventures Academy

GVA Fieldtrips

By: Juliette Dekker

By: Marc Jay Julio

What is Greens Ventures Academy? Green Ventures Academy is a program offered here at John F Kennedy. You first get introduced to the program freshman year, when you take the culinary class. You typically join Green Ventures Academy (GVA) your sophomore year, but some join their junior year. Green Ventures Academy is a program that you take through your whole career of high school, from the moment you join.

Green ventures is a green california partnership of hospitality, culinary arts, and business. The students learn many skills in this program, and they are involved in many things. Some of the things they are involved in are recycling, gardening, and hunger awareness. The goals for GVA are to provide real solutions for living eco-friendly and learn job skills in growing professional industries. They hope that kids will learn business strategies, and how to keep their grades up. Not only does it teach kids lessons, but it also provides kids with academic help. When you do get good grades they make sure to recognize the students for their hard work, and achievements.

The teachers that are in charge of Green Ventures help set up grade checks, and provide a tutor if needed.

Field trips are a staple in Green Ventures Academy. It is something that many students anticipate when they are in the Academy. Most field trips in the Academy are food and hospitality related. The main goal that GVA field trips aim is to expose students to the world of hospitality. With these field trips, students will have a deeper comprehension of what the hospitality world is all about. During the time in the Academy, students will get to go on two to three field trips every year. Some favorite trips from students include Chinatown, Ardenwood Farm, Niles Pie Company, and Mirchi’s Cafe in Dublin.

During the field trips, students are allowed to explore what each place has to offer. For the Chinatown field trip, students are given three hours to basically do whatever they want. Whether it would be buying new clothes or trying exquisite foods, students will often leave with a smile on their face wishing they could spend more time with their peers. Chinatown in San Francisco is often perceived as a fan favorite for many students. Students seem to enjoy the culture that Chinatown brings to the table.

The teachers work towards teaching kids information about business, but also keep them on track for school. Chef Moschetti is the coordinator for Green Ventures and the culinary arts teacher. Chef Moschetti is not the only one to run Green Ventures, there are other teachers. Some of those teachers include Mr.Hunter, Mr.Lydon, Mx.Teguia, and Ms.Rinehart. They are teachers that also support students, and encourage students to have good educational habits. Not only do these teachers support their students academically but also teach them how ro treat others with kindness.

When you talk to a student that is in Green Ventures they have nothing but good things to say about the program. They say they have learned many things, and they have gained a family from the program. I asked Lizette Gamboa What she has learned from and why she loves it. She said “In GVA I have learned to have my priorities straight and how to work efficiently with others. GVA is not only an academic program, but also feels like a family”. I also talked to Jonathan Castillo who said “Some of the things I love about GVA are the people in my class and how we are like one big family. I’ve learned a lot of things about the kitchen and how it works, and how to be responsible in a professional environment”. Overall GVA is a program that can teach students many lessons not only about school, but also about business responsibilities.

GVA on their trip to Chinatown

Each field trip has its own charm and uniqueness. In the Ardenwood field trip, students would not only pet different animals, but they get to experience how people cooked their food by visiting a house that people lived in the 1800s. For Niles Pie Company, students will also learn how working at a restaurant works, as the employees give a tour of the kitchen so students can see how people make their food behind the scenes. Students always learn something new every field trip that can be applicable to their everyday lives. With these field trips, students are able to build lifelong memories with their peers as well as learning something new about the culinary or hospitality industry. Field trips are the most anticipated events that happen in the academy, as many students look forward to visiting new places and learning something new.

How does GVA celebrate the holidays?

Reporter: Marc Jay Julio Editor: Arayana Singh

Green Ventures Academy (GVA) is a three year program at Kennedy where students learn cooking skills and hospitality. Many students in the program often enjoyed being in the program because of how lenient Chef Moschetti is. Every year, Chef Moschetti always hosts holiday parties and competitions to not only celebrate the holidays but spend quality time with the students in the Academy. Chef Moschetti frequently ensures that students do not get bombarded with stress coming from academics. She believes that students should have fun once in a while in times of stress and hard work. Here’s what Chef Moschetti had to say about how GVA celebrates the holidays.

Q: What are some GVA holiday traditions that the Academy celebrates?

A: GVA hosts many holiday celebrations. For Halloween, we do a pumpkin carving competition between classes. For Thanksgiving, we would host a Thanksgiving lunch. Our students will make the dishes and it’s a great way for students and teachers to spend time together. We have a couple traditions for Christmas. The Academy hosts a winter celebration with a hot cocoa bar. The juniors have a Yule Log Competition which is a holiday cake.

Q: How do you spend time with your students during the holidays?

A: Besides hosting holiday parties, I would spend time with my students by making Christmas treats with them. The sophomores are making Peppermint Bark and the juniors are making a Yule Log. These dishes have gotten to be one of the most memorable I have made with my students. I get to see their creativity and passion for the work they do and I could not be more proud.

Q: What is your favorite dish that your students made?

A: It definitely has to be gingerbread cookies. It brings me back to the time when I would make gingerbread cookies with my grandmother. Making gingerbread cookies never gets old. I enjoy seeing my students bake with creativity. It always brings a smile to my face and I always look forward to making gingerbread cookies with my students.

GVA strives for students to feel safe and relieved during the holiday season. Chef Moschetti has great empathy for all of her students in the academy and she knows how to make everyone feel welcomed.

Sweet Turns To Sour

Reporter: Hasini Madiraja Editor: Arayana Singh

After what was expected to be a sweet performance from Pop- star Olivia Rodrigo, is causing a stir with claims of copied content. On the SNL (Saturday night show), Olivia Rodrigo’s “all-American” performance was set on stage hoping to be a crowd pleaser, which turned out to be a scandal. Olivia Rodrigo is in an unpleasant situation as a result of heavy shade directed at her on TikTok by indie singer Noelle Sucks. With a tempting spread of cakes and pastries surrounding her, Rodrigo's dramatic tea party took an unexpected turn—and not only in the lyrics.

In a pink collared dress, red frosting, cake-tossing, and glass-smashing Noelle claims that there is a significant similarity between Rodrigo's performance and her own in a viral TikTok. Noelle shared side-by-side video comparisons that show a lot of resemblances.

Sucks draws attention to the fact that Rodrigo performed alone, taking center stage, whilst her performance featured a backing group of dancers. Tarik Mikou, the creative director of Rodrigo's SNL extravaganza, was unresponsive to Noelle's accusations.

It gets more interesting as Sucks turned up the TikTok drama by posting captions that revealed her allegations of copyright against Rodrigo. "When you see our intellectual property on one of the biggest, longest-running TV shows for the biggest pop star right now." As if this wasn’t bad enough, Sucks also pointed out that a mutual friend of hers happened to be one of Olivia’s directors. When her friends saw the similarity in Mikou's Instagram, the comments were moderated and one of their mutual friends was inexplicably unfollowed after the incident.

Sucks posted another one-liner that read, "In conclusion, give credit where credit is due, or hire me next time," which is how Noelle ends her TikTok. Although this isn’t rare in the music industry, the question remains, Was Rodrigo's Saturday Night Live a work of art on its own, or was someone else's creative work taken off its pedestal?

Fall Sports Recap

Juliette Dekker

Interview with Coach McGaughey

Ayler Ehling

As we entered November, we saw our fall sports come to an end. Overall, all teams had pretty successful seasons, with most of them having winning records. In this past season’s sports, we had girls' tennis, girls' volleyball, football, and cross country. 2 out of those 5 teams had made it to the Northern California State Semifinals (NCS), one of them consisting of football. Many people considered this previous season to be among the best in a very long time, with them finishing off with 7 wins and 3 losses. League-wise, Kennedy had an outstanding record, with 5 wins and only 1 loss. Because of the football team’s tremendous record, they were eligible to play in the NCS, or, in other words, the playoffs. They then proceeded to play the defending state champions, San Marin, with hopes of an upset. Unfortunately, the football team lost in the first round of NCS. Despite their terrible loss, this football season was one to remember. The girl's volleyball team was the other team that made it to the Northern California Sectional playoffs this year. Their overall record was 16 wins and 16 losses. League-wise, they had a mediocre record of 5 wins and 9 losses. Since they had won so many games overall, they qualified for the playoffs. Tragically, the volleyball team also lost in the NCS opening round. This is the first team to qualify for the NCS in more than a decade, despite their heartbreaking loss. Together with volleyball and football, the cross country team also had a great season, with many new runners joining this year. The group constantly challenged itself to perform to the best of both its members' abilities and as a unit. Many runners benefited in the long run from this, as several of them qualified to compete in NCS. Under Coach McGaughey's guidance, the cross-country team enjoyed a very successful season. And finally, there is our girls' tennis squad. Girls tennis enjoyed a successful season this year, much like every other fall sports team. Two victories and three defeats marked their final standings. With this record, they still qualified for the Mission Valley All-League finals (MVAL). A few of the girls competed against all the other local schools in the finals. Let us extend a special thank you to the coaches who have guided their teams to NCS and beyond by pushing them to reach their full potential. All of the teams that played in the fall had excellent seasons.

As the 2023 cross country season comes to an end, Coach Mc Gaughey’s 22nd year of coaching comes to a close as well. So you might wonder: What has inspired him to coach running for all these years? Coach Mc Gaughey emphasized his involvement in running started way long ago at a young age where he competed in his own high school, which he really enjoyed. He expressed, "Running got me through high school because that's how I stayed calm and how I would get rid of stress. I ran track and cross country all four years, and I had a great coach that talked to me about my issues. I have my family involved in it, and it’s just a very positive thing that’s a part of my life." Coach continued on with running all-throughout his life competing professionally, running with his kids, and of course, coaching Kennedy. In addition to this, when queried about the team's recent performance, Coach Mc Gaughey noted a significant difference post-covid in the last 2 years. He observed increased enthusiasm and dedication among team members, fostering a collectively better vibe that brings out the best in everyone.

He shared, "These last 2 years have probably been my favorite teams-wise since I've been here, and this year was 22 years. I've had individuals in the past who have been great and I've had a couple teams that did well, but as far as the whole team feeling, I think these last two years have been the best." Looking ahead, Coach Mc Gaughey is contemplating sharing coaching responsibilities with someone else, considering his age. Although not entirely sure about track, he is leaning towards retirement soon.

Boys Soccer Captains

Juliette Dekker

Paul states that his role as captain comes with a variety of responsibilities. The biggest responsibilities are leading the team and taking charge. Paul said, “One might think since most of us are in the same age group that the job would be much easier, but that was far from the truth”. Being around the same age, if not younger than everyone else, proposes a series of hardships. However, as the season progresses, Paul learns and accepts that this is his role and responsibility. We are now going to highlight the two senior captains, starting with Fernando Bermudez. He joined the varsity team in his sophomore year and is in his first year as captain. As a second-year player on the team, he feels honored to be a captain for his teammates. Yet, there are a lot of duties associated with being a captain.

Among his duties are consoling his teammates, assisting them in developing their abilities, and boosting their self-assurance while they play. The second senior captain is Jasraj Sandhu, who has joined the varsity team for the past 4 years. Being the captain, in his opinion, makes him a role model for his underclassmen. On the field, he must communicate effectively because he will be held responsible for his actions. The captains of this year are outstanding role models for the freshmen and outstanding leaders on the field. The boys have established a high bar for the upcoming captains and taught the younger players how to conduct themselves on the field.

The boy's varsity soccer team has a total of 16 players, consisting of three varsity captains. The three varsity captains are junior Paul Orobyi, senior Fernando Bermudez, and senior Jasraj Sandhu. First, we will highlight Paul Orobyi, the lone junior captain. This is Paul's second year on the varsity soccer team and since he was considered for captain, this is the only position he can reasonably expect to play. Now that he is in this role, he aspires to perform to the highest standard and provide the best leadership for his team.

The team has great chemistry as well as bonds, which will pave the way for a fun season! Despite the growing excitement, the team remains humble as they approach the winter sports season. Six freshmen, including two who were awarded starting roles, helped the John F. Kennedy Girls Varsity basketball team stay focused on their current path. Varsity Head Coaches Caila Butler and Cambell express pride in the team's work ethic and determination. The anticipation extends beyond victories, emphasizing the collective spirit and sportsmanship inherent in high school sports. The players' drive is evident in their dedication to both the game and their shared experiences, which creates a foundation for a season that goes beyond the scoreboard. Many unforgettable moments from team bondings, games, and practices will electrify the stage of a legacy of sportsmanship that will carry beyond the court.

As fall sports come to a close, winter sports are finally here! With six freshmen, two of whom are starters, the John F. Kennedy Girls Varsity basketball team has an exciting season ahead of them. Varsity Head Coaches Caila Butler and Coach Cambell state, “We are excited to see our work in action as the games carry on. We want to change the perspective on girls' basketball here. We are beyond proud of the girls for putting in the work and determination.” The anticipation is not just about victories on the scoreboard but also about the collective spirit and sportsmanship that define the essence of high school sports. Their journey promises to be more than a series of games; it is a shared experience that unites players and supporters alike in the celebration of athleticism and the thrill of the game.

Cheer Captains

Hannah Cornell

Introducing Jaiveen Singh, one of the three John F. Kennedy High School cheer captains. Ever since freshman year, Jaiveen has found herself on the varsity cheer team. Currently, she is in her senior year, approaching the last couple of months of fulfilling her role as captain. She now serves as her team's occasional base in addition to its flier. Jaiveen’s closest friends and family have always been her strongest supporters; they are constantly rooting for her, whether it’s during her halftime performances or even just cheering on the sidelines with her teammates. Her friend Ariam, who served as her inspiration to pursue cheer, provided her with unwavering support and guidance when she decided to enter the world of cheerleading. One of the achievements she has made as a cheerleader is being an All-American due to her exceptional performance at every cheerleading camp her team attended. Throughout her time cheerleading for JFK, Jaiveen has made many memories during sports events, particularly football and basketball games. Even though her team participates in rallies, which makes cheering even more exciting, she loves watching the school get all fired up during these events. Another part of cheer Jaiveen loves is when she and the team master new stunts, adding more enjoyment to her cheerleading experience.

Despite all these adventures within cheer activities, off-field bonding moments hold a special place in her heart. According to the captain, one of the most unforgettable memories was when the team got their nails done together, followed by a team bonding dinner. She treasures and enjoys these moments not only because they strengthen her bond with her teammates but also because they enhance the team's overall relationship. As she approaches the second half of her basketball season, Jaiveen has created goals for her team. She stated, "All I want is for my team to have fun and hit every routine while trying our best.” She has faith in her team's ability to succeed and is committed to ensuring that they do so while enjoying themselves. Even her coach, Mr. Tagami, commands the leadership and the skills she has put in for this team; as he stated, "Jaiveen has dedication and heart as a captain, as well as good skills for cheerleading.” Even though being a cheer captain can be stressful at times, Jaiveen would not trade it for anything and is appreciative of her co-captains, Emily and Monse.

Boys Basketball Senior Spotlight

Juliette Dekker

The Varsity boys basketball team consists of 8 seniors this year, two of whom are Adrian Velazquez and Will Dorsey, who have been on Varsity the longest. Adrian Velazquez has been on the varsity basketball team for three years and has been playing basketball for a total of seven years. This year, he was given the position of varsity team captain. These past three years, Adrian has shown great leadership, proving to his coach that he can become a great captain. Since sophomore year, he has been blessed with the opportunity to play basketball with his best friends, one of whom is Will Dorsey. I asked Adrian which of these seasons he remembered the most. He states that beating Logan is one of his favorite memories from the season. One thing that Adrain has learned is that hard work can be talent when talent fails to work hard. He became aware of the fact that working hard during practice would pay off in the long run. While being captain, Adrian has gained an understanding of the importance of patience and communicating with his team. Will Doresy is the other basketball player I interviewed.

Will has also been a part of the varsity basketball team for 3 years, playing basketball for a total of 15 years. Similar to Adrian, Will has been able to play with a few of his best friends. I asked Will what his favorite memory from basketball season was, and he said it was when they beat San Marin in the Northern California Section playoffs. Being a member of the basketball team has taught Will many things, one of which is the importance of always having people by your side. With every boy on the team, he has forged an extremely strong relationship. They seem to be a single, extended family to him. Will would like to emphasize to all of the team's freshmen that perseverance is worthwhile. To be successful in games, they must practice diligently. The seniors of this year have been great role models for the freshmen, teaching them the value of hard work and teamwork.

Seniors Stress as College Approaches

Final Exams Angst

If you aren’t a senior yet, you’re lucky. Currently, most seniors are agonizing over the impending next phase of their life: college. A life that most people were told they would have to work hard to achieve despite the debilitating debt. College is the reality that all seniors have to face soon, and most students don’t face reality well.

Many seniors end up procrastinating on their college applications, hitting incredibly close to the deadline and risking their opportunities to get into a college or university.

On the contrary, though. Not every senior is overly stressed because of college applications. From American High School, Sebastian Neal-Judd states that he’s been relatively stress-free about his college applications, finding the main stressful part to be the tedium of transcripts and grades. Having applied only to universities around the area, he also hasn’t felt the stress of having too many college applications like many of his peers, who often try to get into overly competitive private schools. Intending to major in Public Health, Neal-Judd finds that his only roadblock is having to take Statistics when he struggles with math.

Reporter: Kiyone Tanaka Gacayan

Another student, who has been handling her stress rather well, is Angela D’Amelio, from James Logan High School. She has been balancing her time by strictly planning out time to work on applications, in which she would only think about the applications at those times. Her main stressor has even been the essay portion, as she says they are the only things she could change now. D’Amelio, wanting to major in Environmental Science, considered her options and applied to twelve colleges in and out-of state; thankfully, she’s excited to live somewhere new for college.

Though, who wants to be hearing from students from other schools? Kennedy's pride, after all. From our very own school, Ella Wang has also been dealing with college applications and has been dealing with them rather well. She finds that the application process is relatively straightforward, with the most stressful part being the fact that she has to stay organized. Planning on majoring in something math-related, she has been applying to only California colleges, having heard great things about them overall. She’s looking forward to the experience of college, especially with the fact that, while incredibly supportive, her family hasn’t been all too pressuring with her. Really, it depends on the person and their plans for their future. If you’re not a senior—and especially if you’re a junior—would you consider yourself prepared for college?

Editor: Nicholas Blaize

As the end of the first semester approaches, students have reason for an impending sense of dread: finals season. Finals generally take place in the form of an exam or project, supposedly testing a student on the knowledge taught to them over the semester. Most of the time, finals account for a significant percentage of a student’s grade in the class. Because of the mass amounts of material to study within a short amount of time, finals are a major cause of stress in high school students.

Multiple students were inquired on their perspectives regarding final exams. “I think the most stressful aspect of finals for me is that most of my grade weighs on it,” says Alicia Wong (2025), “it just makes me really nervous about if I can really pull through or not.” Wong is also currently a junior, which adds another aspect to the stress. “This year is a really important year in high school so I constantly feel that I can’t fail just yet,” Wong adds, explaining the constant pressure of performing well, as junior year is often considered the most important year of high school. These comments show how finals take a mental toll on students, as students are more concerned about their grades than actually knowing all the concepts they were taught.

Reporter: Deborah Chen

Another student brings up the fact that students should get some leniency in finals as there are so many things to remember. “It is very hard to recall some detail you were taught 5 months ago because it isn’t possible to write everything down,” notes Jade Rodriguez (2025). Rodriguez goes on to suggest, “Teachers should be more lenient with finals. Finals are not always necessary since students already take tests all the time, and students deserve a break.” A more effective way to help students retain the information they have learned is to make regular tests cumulative, incorporating little bits from previous lessons throughout the year, instead of cramming all of it into one giant exam at the end of the semester.

Aside from being mentally exhausting, final exams are not friendly to physical wellbeing either. The process of studying for finals often consists of desperate attempts to recall and retain all the information taught across the span of the year. Add several other classes and finals to study for to the list, and the hours of sleep deprivation pile up rapidly.

The point of finals should be to recap the content of a course. However, based on students’ personal experiences, the negative impact of final exams on students far overrules any benefit there may be. If finals do not actually help students in the way they should, maybe alternatives should be considered.

Beyond his duties as a supervisor, Coach Damewood has had an impressive coaching career at JFK, dedicating 40 years to the football team and several years to baseball as well. While coaching, his most outstanding achievement with his team and other coaches was going 10-0 for 2 seasons. However, one of his most cherished memories is coaching his son for three years and seeing his team win games in the playoffs. He is also grateful that he created bonds and saw so many people grow as a person and see them succeed in the future.

This school holds a special place in Coach Damewood's heart because of the deep connections he has for this school, which is that he, his wife, siblings, and children are all proud alumni of JFK. He also loves his bonds with his colleagues and others, making this school feel like a community. He cherishes the uniqueness of this school with all the traditions and legacy it has brought over the years. In Coach Damewood's eyes, JFK isn't just a workplace but a second home where he has made many memories.

-- to connect with students personally, taking the time to inquire about their day, offering words of encouragement, and pointing them in the right direction. If you're an athlete, he will always ask how the match or game went and give you tips and positive feedback.

Meet Coach Damewood, the man who is known for riding a golf cart around the school and coaching the football team at John F. Kennedy High School. For over a decade, he has been a dedicated supervisor for the school and has put so much time and effort into making this school a safe place for students. Prior to his role at JFK, Coach Damewood spent 24 years as a deputy sheriff, and in a twist of fate, his retirement ushered in a new chapter as the head coach for the school’s football team, which also brought his role to being a supervisor for the school.

As a supervisor, Coach Damewood makes a positive impact on the school with all the tasks he performs. Whether navigating the premises in a golf cart or overseeing tasks related to maintenance, security, and safety, his commitment to the well-being of his students is unmistakable. He also assists the teachers and the principal with anything they need. What he cherishes the most about his position is the chance--

Suju’s Coffee: A Student Favorite

of prom—begin to be present. These are donated by people who simply want to cast away their old prom clothing; passing it to new people is beneficial as well. Formal clothing is often incredibly expensive, some ending up in the hundreds of dollars; many students might not be able to afford it because of that predicament.

Suju’s Coffee & Tea, or Suju’s for short, is a popular destination for JFK high school students. Conveniently located across the street from Kennedy, the coffeeshop is one of the most frequented places in the neighborhood for high schoolers who need a place to study, want a snack, or even just want to hang out.

What are some of Suju’s features? The first thing one may notice about Suju’s is the structure of the building. The circular orientation of the interior and glass windows all around the room allow natural light to brighten the cafe, creating a cozy atmosphere. Plenty of tables and chairs are arranged inside, along with additional outdoor seating. Upon entering, the “kitchen” can be seen where all the food and drinks are made in front of the customers.

What type of food does Suju’s have? Suju’s makes all sorts of food items such as drinks, sandwiches, desserts, and much more. They also have seasonal drinks, such as their peppermint hot chocolate. According to a high school student, the best hot drinks include the hot chocolate or vanilla latte, and the best cold drinks are the mocha and java chip frappuccino. It seems Suju’s is also a good option for students who walk to school and didn’t have a chance to eat before leaving home. “Sometimes I go in the morning to get a [chocolate] muffin and a drink for breakfast,” the JFK student recounts, “they have good customer service too.” With good food and a friendly staff, people are bound to keep coming back.

Reporter: Deborah Chen

With that being said, there is just one thing that Suju’s can improve on. Something to note is a longer wait time to get your order during busier hours. “Maybe (when busy) have more people working on the drinks, sometimes it takes a while to get your order during rush hour,” the student inputs. This is certainly understandable as staff may sometimes be limited and are unable to keep up with the large amount of orders, but it could be a factor for them to consider for improvement.

All in all, Suju’s is an inviting coffee shop that holds special value in the hearts of the students at John F. Kennedy high school. Whether you want to stop by for a quick refresher or cram a school project, Suju’s is always a viable option. What is your favorite part about Suju’s?

Editor: Nicholas Blaize

This leads to a larger problem, though. Kennedy is an incredibly financially disadvantaged school in the Fremont Unified School District, and unlike many students at other schools, Kennedy students find themselves in a place where the most important things—whether simple necessities or something based on a social event—are inaccessible. That is where Kennedy’s food pantry comes in.

Kennedy’s food pantry is meant to assist students in ways that Titan Thrift does not reach into. Led by Mx. Teguia and Mrs. Hernandez, Kennedy’s food pantry is meant to help students attain their essentials. Costly hygienic products, canned food, and the like.

Titan Thrift & Pantry

Not everyone has access to essentials like clothes, food, or hygiene products. Both Titan Thrift and the food pantry are services that Kennedy has that provides these essentials for students in need, with no judgment to any of their situations.

As it nears prom, though, the access to clothing broadens. Instead of the normal, casual clothing that Titan Thrift tends to give out, clothes that are much more fitting for formals—that is to say, the event

Mx. Teguia states that much of this is also influenced by Kennedy’s economic situation, with Kennedy’s population being at an economic disadvantage—about 40% of Kennedy students specifically. This is much more than the other schools in the district, with the other schools often ranging in the 7% to 13% range.

Recently, the food pantry got a massive donation of canned food (although much of the canned food was expired). This does not mean it shouldn’t continue to get donations—if there’s anything you can donate (food, school supplies, unused hygiene products), it would be great to donate them.

ENTERTAINMENT

Stephen Lambert, the executive producer, also spoke up about player welfare in an interview with BBC News. He mentioned that everyone was warned about the cold temperatures ahead of time and that they took all necessary precautions to prepare the contestants. He did acknowledge that a few contestants were unhappy about being eliminated and that it was a cold and long experience, but emphasized that safety measures were in place.

'Squid Game: The Challenge' Sparks Controversy Over Contestant Safety

Despite these assurances, some contestants have come forward with allegations of injury and are seeking financial compensation. An investigation is ongoing, and it's raised questions about the responsibility of reality TV shows to protect their contestants. Should producers prioritize entertainment over safety? What do you think?

In a shocking turn of events, contestants from the reality series Squid Game: The Challenge have come forward with allegations of suffering painful injuries during the show's filming in January. While no official lawsuit has been filed, letters of claim have been sent to co-producer Studio Lambert seeking financial compensation for the alleged injuries.

The anonymous contestants have spoken out about the poor health and safety standards on set, which they claim led to hypothermia and nerve damage.

They describe being pushed to their limits in the name of entertainment, with production companies prioritizing ratings over their well-being. Daniel Slade, Chief Executive Officer (Legal) at Express Solicitors, has issued a statement condemning the alleged lack of regard for contestant safety. "Production companies need to ensure that health and safety standards on their shows don't leave people at risk of harm," he emphasized. This controversy raises questions about the ethics of reality TV and the responsibility of producers to protect their contestants. As the investigation unfolds, fans of the show are left wondering how such alleged mistreatment could have occurred. The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the importance of prioritizing contestant welfare in the reality TV industry.

Remember when Squid Game: The Challenge was filming back in January and The Sun published some pretty concerning articles? They claimed that the Red Light, Green Light game - inspired by the original Squid Game series - was filmed in freezing temperatures that led to serious injuries like frostbite. Well, Netflix and Studio Lambert immediately denied those reports, saying they took all the necessary steps to ensure everyone's safety and that contestants were prepared for the cold. They even put out a joint statement stating, "We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set - and participants were prepared for that - any claims of serious injury are untrue."

Martha Stewart’s Festive Recipes

New Disney Movie Fails to Amaze

Reporter: Nathan Lin Editor: Arayana Singh

Reporter: Ismael Rasul Editor: Arayana Singh

Disney has been releasing many animated movies in the past few years, such as Elementals, Soul, Encanto, and many others, all of which did reasonably well. However, one movie, in particular, did not fare as well, called Wish.

Martha Stewart, the renowned chef and host of her own cooking show, has graciously decided to share three amazing Christmas recipes that she believes everyone should know. These recipes are Christmas classics, elevated with Martha's magical touch. Let's delve into these recently unveiled culinary gems.

This movie is about a seventeen-year-old girl named Asha, voiced by West Side Story Oscar winner Ariana Debose, who flies into the sky and makes a passionate wish to the stars. During this journey, it leads to Asha meeting a living star that has fallen from the sky. This attracts the attention of the main antagonist named Magnifico, the evil ruler of the Kingdom of Rosas.

The first recipe Martha insists every Christmas party should feature is the time-tested Eggnog. Rather than settling for store-bought versions, Martha advocates for the joy of crafting your own at home. Martha's recipe requires 12 large eggs (separated), 1 1/2 cups of superfine sugar, 1 1/2 quarts of heavy cream, 1 quart of whole milk, 3 cups of bourbon, 1/2 cup of dark rum, 2 cups of cognac, and freshly grated nutmeg. Combine these ingredients, and you'll have a delightful batch of homemade eggnog.

Now, let's discuss the profits and popularity of this film directed by Fawn Veerasunthorn and Chris Buck. This movie made approximately 107.8 million dollars worldwide, setting a record low for any film created by Walt Disney Studio Motion Pictures. The budget for this film was about 175 million dollars to 200 million dollars, but it has generated only 107.8 million dollars worldwide so far, showing that this movie has created no profits for Disney Pictures.

Moving on to another holiday favorite, Sugar Cookies. These delectable treats are a Christmas classic, enjoyed at any festive gathering and, of course, by Santa himself. The recipe for sugar cookies calls for all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 2 sticks of unsalted butter, 2 cups of sugar, 2 large eggs, 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract, and Royal Icing. Follow the directions provided in the Cookie recipe, and you'll have cookies that not only please your party guests but also make Santa's visit extra special.

Wish was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film but, in the end, did not win, falling short of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio. This film was not awarded or nominated for any other awards, thus also proving that it was a “flop” in the industry. However, some people may have enjoyed it for its plot, characters, and animation style. Just because this award did not make any profit or is considered a “flop” does not mean that this movie was awful. Certain people may have enjoyed it more than others.

In all, Wish could be a fantastic and outstanding movie to some people but an absolute disaster and a hard-to-watch movie for others. It all depends on your preferences in characters, the plot of a film, and different animation styles. These factors can intrigue more viewers or repel other viewers.

Martha's final revelation is a bit of a wild card – a recipe for Cheese Straws. No, you won't be sipping eggnog through these savory snacks. The recipe for these delectable treats includes 1 cup of finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry (preferably all-butter), all-purpose flour, and 2 large eggs lightly beaten. Find the detailed instructions in the Cheese Straw recipe.

Now armed with the knowledge of these top-secret recipes, how will you celebrate Christmas with your family this year? Get ready to impress your loved ones with Martha Stewart's culinary creations and add a touch of magic to your holiday festivities.

Are you worried about your holiday packages getting stolen right off your porch? Well, this is a growing concern for many homeowners, especially during the holiday season. With the increase in online shopping, packages are often left unattended on front porches, making them an easy target for thieves. According to a recent survey, nearly 20% of homeowners have had packages stolen from their porch. This not only causes inconvenience but also financial loss. In this article, we'll explore some practical tips and solutions for keeping your packages safe from porch pirates.

"The rise of porch piracy has led to a growing demand for package security solutions," says John Smith, a home security expert. "Homeowners are looking for ways to protect their packages and deter thieves, and there are several options available." One option is the use of smart lockboxes, which can be accessed with a code or through a mobile app. This allows delivery drivers to securely leave packages in a locked box, preventing theft and providing homeowners with peace of mind.

Another option is to use a package tracking device, such as the one offered by Package Guard. This device tracks packages from the delivery truck to the recipient's doorstep, providing real-time updates and alerts if someone tries to tamper with the package.

The camera and microphone allow you to monitor and communicate with delivery drivers in real-time, ensuring that packages are delivered safely and securely. The motion detection feature can alert you if someone tries to tamper with or steal a package, allowing you to take action quickly. The app's sharing feature allows you to grant access to neighbors or family members, creating a community watch that can help protect everyone's packages.

Criticism of the Recent Napoleon Movie

Ozzy Osbourne: A Rock Icon's Potential Farewell Performance

Writer: Srikar Nanduri, Editor: Konstantin Ljubic

Writer: Ryan Lei, Editor: Konstantin Ljubic

A fellow of the Hoover Institution had said that the Napoleon movie was only accurate for about 38 minutes. I would say that even that number is being generous on this horror of a historical epic. If I had tried to critique all of the historical inaccuracies and the base narrative that the movie tries to push you’d find that the read time of this article would likely go far past the 2 hours and 38 minutes screen time of the movie. Even limiting it to the Battle of Waterloo scene is too much to fit within one article which is why I am only mentioning the most egregious inaccuracies of the battle sequence.

First, let's give Napoleon some deserved credit before the egregious acts come. The movie’s one major redeeming quality is its uniforms. The costume designers are likely the only people that shouldn’t be fired as most of it was on point, historically accurate, and just nice to appreciate. Many movies commit the mistake of not having any still cannons but luckily Napoleon decides to cover it as well.

Now, let’s go to the vast problems of the movie in this one battle sequence alone. Let’s go over the silliest part yet, the portrayal of the Baker Rifle. Keep in mind that scopes were only ever documented to be used in the Royal Navy during this time and only in armies starting 1844. Yet for some reason the 95th riflemen are shown to have telescopes fastened on their rifles to act as scopes. They also changed the detail of an artillery officer originally asking to fire on Napoleon to the rifleman for no particular reason. The biggest inaccuracy of the battle would be every single cavalry charge shown. First, they change the entire intention of the French cavalry charge from Ney believing the British are retreating to Ney wanting to act before the Prussians arrived. After that, they show the French cavalry (which should be completely annihilated by the squares after the charge) again charging in with the Imperial Guard. They also show British cavalry (which also shouldn’t be there after charging themselves prior to the charge mentioned earlier) counter charging. Napoleon is shown charging in with his nonexistent cavalry which is genuinely one of the dumbest scenes I have ever seen. Napoleon was known for being shot in the leg before however having the Emperor charge in risking his death defies all real and movie logic. Ridley Scott truly is a “washed” filmmaker.

Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary figure whose name is synonymous with rock and metal, has long been a powerhouse in the music industry. However, recent announcements and whispers from within his camp suggest that the Prince of Darkness might be gearing up for what could potentially be his final live performance, a momentous occasion that would mark the end of an era for rock enthusiasts worldwide.

Osbourne, whose career spans over half a century, has been an indelible force in shaping the landscape of rock music. From his groundbreaking tenure with Black Sabbath to his immensely successful solo career, Osbourne's contribution to the genre is immeasurable. His influence extends far beyond his music, cultivating a persona that embodies rebellion, resilience, and raw energy.

Despite battling health challenges in recent years, including Parkinson's disease, Osbourne has remained resolute in his commitment to his artistry and his fans. However, the toll of performing live, coupled with health concerns, has led to speculation that the end of his touring days might be imminent.

The prospect of witnessing Osbourne's potential farewell performance has stirred emotions among fans and the music community alike. For many, his concerts have been transformative experiences, brimming with electrifying energy and a sense of nostalgia, evoking memories of an era when rock music was at its prime.

Should this indeed be Osbourne's final bow on stage, it will undoubtedly be a bittersweet moment, a celebration of an illustrious career while bidding farewell to a titan of rock. The significance of this event is not lost on fans who recognize the historical weight of witnessing a living legend take his final curtain call.

The anticipation surrounding this possible farewell performance is tinged with a sense of gratitude for the decades of music and the impact Osbourne has had on the genre. His charisma, distinctive voice, and larger-than-life presence have left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of generations of music lovers.

As speculations loom and details remain unconfirmed, fans around the world hold onto hope for a chance to be part of this historic moment, to witness the conclusion of an extraordinary musical journey, an event that would mark the end of an era in rock music and solidify Osbourne's legacy as an icon.

Social Media: Helpful or Harmful?

On the Israel-Hamas War

Matthew Perry Found Dead

Writer: Keshia Sangil, Editor: Konstantin Ljubic

Writer: Matteo Gutierrez, Editor: Konstantin Ljubic

Writer: Nicholas Blaize, Editor: Konstantin Ljubic

The debate about social media is never-ending and could be one of the most talked about when it comes to young adults. Parents usually say that social media is harmful to their children because of the content that is posted on social media. What they don’t know is that social media is not harmful all the time. Social media also has its good uses, which can be helpful in different ways.

Social media is helpful for communication. People can now use social media to try and reach out to people, like an audience, when they want to deliver a message or update people on what is happening. An example of this would be our school’s leadership class. They often use social media to update the students on what is happening in the next few weeks, which is an effective way to get people to participate in school events and lunch activities. Since most students have social media, it is the easiest way to reach out to people rather than telling them one by one or handing out fliers every time an activity is about to happen. Not only does it help with reaching out to an area, but it can also help with reaching out to people all over the world. Social media posts can be viewed internationally, which is helpful if you are trying to reach a large audience. Given that social media is accessible as long as you have a device, it is also a great way to spread awareness about events that are happening in the world. Most people are not aware of the problems the world is going through, and with social media, other people can easily spread awareness to give information to those who are not aware of these situations. People can repost on their social media accounts with information regarding the problem, which could boost engagement in the situation that is ongoing.

Overall, social media can be helpful in many ways. If it’s used properly, then it would not be as harmful as some people say it is.

Since 1948, Palestine and Israel have been conflicting as a result of the Arab-Israeli War, resulting in the establishment of the State of Israel and allowing for profound territorial changes in favor of Israel. Tensions from this war have left a lasting effect among these regions and have recently sparked yet another battle. On October 7th, 2023, Hamas breached the Gaza border and launched rockets into Israel territory. This Palestinian militant group, which many consider a terrorist organization, has encountered many difficulties in governing Gaza and remains committed to resisting Israel. Hamas officials state that their attack was to counterattack the Israeli occupation, the blockade of the Gaza Strip, violence by Israeli settlers, Palestinian travel restrictions, and the imprisonment of Palestinians.

Numerous controversies have arisen from the war. Accusations of war crimes are directed at both sides in the Israeli-Hamas conflict as the civilian death toll rises, but determining violations relies on evidence and judgments made by commanders from the International Criminal Court. In November 2023, The House passed a $14.5 billion aid package for Israel, omitting humanitarian assistance for Gaza. Many people are outraged at United States President Biden for allowing the funds to go to Israel, especially considering their direct war crimes on Palestine territory. Israel has violated multiple policies that align with United Nations codes, such as utilizing bombs near or on hospitals and schools, further angering people in support of Palestine. However, the public counteracts these claims by pointing out that Hamas launched an unprecedented attack that left multiple unarmed Israeli civilians dead.

Though this dispute is between Palestine and Israel, the significant effects of this war are evident. The World Bank warns that the Israel-Gaza conflict may trigger a global economic shock, with oil prices potentially hitting $150 a barrel. Additionally, thousands are possibly facing homelessness and hunger due to the destruction in Gaza. Unfortunately, as of mid-December, almost 20,000 Palestinians have been killed, and an estimated 48,800 have been injured. On the other hand, Israel reports 1,147 casualties, which is significantly less than Palestine's toll. It is safe to say that neither side will undeniably prevail, considering both regions have suffered severe damage to both their people and infrastructure.

Star actor Matthew Perry found dead in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home, having died of an apparent drowning on October 28, 2023. While much speculation still surrounds this death, the acting world and the fans who love it mourn the loss of a man who brought smiles through 10 seasons of the hit sitcom “Friends”. Where he starred as Chandler Bing, the witty roommate with dry humor who never seemed to fail to make everyone laugh. Perry starred in other popular movies such as “The Whole Nine Yards” and a popular romantic comedy “Fools Rush In”. According to the Los Angeles Times he had previously struggled with alcoholism and an opioid addiction. “Since then, he estimated, he’d spent more than $7 million on efforts to get sober, including multiple stints in rehab” (Winton, Brennan, Sheets). Perry had a previous encounter with death as he dealt with these addiction issues, a previous health issue in 2018 where he was hospitalized for 5 months after a colon rupture. He stated himself that he had a 2% chance of surviving through the night. While the film scene definitely has its upsides, it had a lot of downsides for Perry. He felt the need to make the live studio audience laugh every episode, and that weighed on his mental. The pressure he held over himself caused him to plunge back into these addictions throughout his career. While he did have his struggles, he impacted many of those around him. Perry was known to be an easygoing and kind man to everyone he met, and the bonds he made with his co stars would last a lifetime, though his life was tragically cut short at the age of 54.

He pushed himself to chase his fame, and that was his goal. Perry wanted to be noticed by everyone and make them laugh. His goal was the American dream, and to love all those around them. He cared for others’ happiness more than his own, and he showed that by the way he treated others. “Asked how he’d like to be remembered, he said: ‘As a guy who lived life, loved well, lived well and helped people. That running into me was a good thing, and not something bad’”(Winton, Brennan, Sheets). Matthew Perry was a man who wanted nothing but good, and while he had his struggles, his memory will live on forever through the people’s hearts he touched and through the work he created.
